Waking up around 9:20 a.m.
Van call is 10 a.m. We all separate into our respective rentals. Soccer mom van in full swing featuring myself, Mike, Rebecca, and Nancy. A full 24 hours + driving ahead of us.
Breakfast Bar. Tea.
Rebecca takes the wheel away from Bakersfield and L.A.
Pit stop at In-N-Out, a west coast classic.
PB Bagel with Fries and an Iced Coffee.
Headed towards the Mojave Desert – still many more hours to go. I sit in the passenger seat enjoying the scenic view of mountainous western terrain and lots of trains. Meanwhile, I’m on my laptop and phone getting some work done.
At some point I take the wheel for a long time – driving us to a Colorado River spot and then straight into Grand Canyon National Park. It’s about 10 p.m. at night – we were worried we wouldn’t be able to see any of the giant hole in the ground but we were gifted with a bright full moon. It’s a stunning sight standing there with the heavy wind about to knock us off the edge at any moment.
At some point after midnight I find us a Denny’s to enjoy a hot late night dinner. We’re literally the only customers. Eggs, Spinach, Tomato, Hash Browns, and French Toast with Coffee.
Back on the road – Rebecca takes the wheel for a little while – I catch up on footage from the day.
Then, at some point at 2 a.m. Mike and Nancy drive us through the night. In order for us to lie down in the back I have to move all the luggage to the middle row strategically. Sleeping soundly, not at first, but eventually.
